CENTRAL DISTRICT EVENT: Sunday, March 1, 2–3:30 pm “SUFFRAGE CENTENNIAL IN BLACK AND WHITE” at the Eastern Branch of Monmouth County Library, 1001 NJ Rt. 35, Shrewsbury.
Monmouth County Branches of AAUW and League of Women Voters (LWV) will celebrate the centennial of the 19th Amendment with a distinctive program that tells, via role playing, the suffrage story through the words of five women (and one man) who made it happen, beginning with the mid-19th century efforts of Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass. Carrie Chapman Catt, Alice Paul, and Ida B. Wells bring the story to 1920, along with its undercurrent of racism. Fanny Lou Hamer then brings us to the passage of the 1965 Voting Rights Act, finally extending suffrage to black women throughout the country and especially the South. Co-sponsored with LWV, T Thomas Fortune, and Monmouth County Library Eastern Branch. Please contact Pat Baroska if you plan to attend and would like to join some of us for a nearby Brunch at noon at the Mollie Pitcher Inn in Red Bank. The Brunch price is $44.95 and is located at 88 Riverside Ave. Red Bank. Contact: Patricia Baroska, AAUW-NJ Central District Coordinator, email@example.com
BRANCH MEETING: March 10, 6:30 PM, Bernards Township Library, 32 S Maple Ave, Basking Ridge.PROGRAM: The Women Air Force Piolets of WWII presented by Carol Simon Levin. Light refreshments will be served.
BOOK SALE NEWS
RECOMMENDED DISTRIBUTION OF FUNDS FROM OUR 2019 BOOK SALE.
The Book Sale Committee recommends that the Branch donate the funds as shown. This will be published in both February and March newsletter (E-Blasts) and voted on by the full Branch at our March monthly meeting. Per our by-laws, and as a 501(c)(3) organization, we must give away the funds made in the previous year’s book sale less money for a $2000 contingency reserve. This amounts to $24,500 in 2020 from our 2019 sale. Once approved by the Branch, we will award our 2020 Branch gifts at our Annual Dinner on May 12, 2020.
Just for information:
Our Branch Individual Endowment Fund #4358 designated for Research and Projects Grants for women connected to New Jersey was opened in 2011 for Branch and individual contributions. The Branch had a commitment to complete the fund at $75000 or more by June 2021. As of our 2018 Book Sale proceeds, distributed in May 2019, the Branch made its commitment to fund our endowment 2 years early Thanks to all. This fund is now considered closed.
The recommendation is to give the proceeds from our 2019 sale to the AAUW National Greatest Needs Fund. The Branch, in the past, has also given to the AAUW Legal Advocacy Fund. Our national staff considers this fund adequate for the advocacy work staffed and planned in the foreseeable future. We will revisit this next year when we look at where the funds from our 2020 Book Sale could best support.
